Money is important in today's day and age. Back in the day people lived off of the land. The kids helped the parents hunt and gather. Times have changed. Rather than doing these things ourselves we pay to have them done. It's certainly possible in some areas of the country to live with no money. However, if you don't want to be a homeless person who runs around in a loincloth looking for food money is essential. There really aren't a lot of ways around money. If you don't have money you don't have food, clothing, shelter or any of the other basic necessities.
The most important thing you can teach your child about money is just how important it is. You don't need to treat it like some type of deity. It's not a good thing when someone cares about money and money only. While it is definitely important it isn't something that should be worshiped so to speak. Tell them about how hard you work to make that money and what it means to your family. This can be done from a very young age. Hopefully this instills in their mind that money is important and should not be wasted. While the saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" isn't necessarily true it's always a good idea to start young.
Once you've taught them just how important money is frugality with money should be the next step. There are thousands of ways to save money. Some of them are easy to teach while others are not. Teach your children your tips and tricks so that they can use them in their life. With the internet revolution many of these techniques are going to be used online. Make sure that you get them used to computers so that they can feel comfortable doing such things online. Kids also need to be in the right mind so that they can manage their money. Once they know how important money is being frugal with it should just follow naturally. If they really want to buy something then you should let them. Depriving them of things because you're worried about their money spending habits isn't always a good thing. That way when they buy that new game system they can feel the reward that hard work gives them. They will then be well on their way to managing their money well!
